tips for decorating your home

Re-decorating your home can be an extremely exciting and rewarding process. From choosing your favorite wallpaper or paint tint to relaxing in a newly decorated space. As a painter and decorator, I to find it rewarding helping people transform their living spaces. However, it isn’t always easy sailing, especially if you are undertaking your first decorating project. The temptation to jump in head first without planning out the project properly can quickly turn the excitement to frustration with the end result not always living up to your expectations. To help guide you through the process, here are my top five tips to get the best possible finish.

1. Get inspiration

Decorating your home takes time and effort, so you want to be sure to get the best possible result. So do some research. The internet is full of amazing sources of inspiration. For example, type home decorating into Pinterest and you’ll be inundated with ideas.

2. Get samples

Once you’ve chosen a design, collect some samples of the different elements that will go into it. The colours or patterns may look great in a picture but may look different when added to your own sized space, with different light and furniture. A good supplier should give you samples of paint and wallpaper to see how the room will look when you’re finished. This may prolong the process, but its far less time consuming and cheaper than buying all the materials only to find you aren’t happy.

3. Make a list of everything you might need.

Once you’ve start painting and decorating it’s not always easy to find a convenient time to stop and dash out to your local decorating centre. Sit down before you start and list everything you need to complete the job and have it there for when you’re ready to go.

4. Properly prepare the space

Preparing the space for decorating generally take me more time than the actual paint application or wallpaper hanging. Fixing any blemishes, cleaning the walls or removing old wallpaper will ensure that the project runs a lot smoother with more professional looking results. So fix imperfections, wipe down surfaces and cover all furnishings before you start.

5. Consider getting a professional

Just like anything in life, the more experience you have doing something the better the outcome. Professional painters and decorators transform spaces for a living. They will give a fantastic, floorless finish in half the time it would take someone with little experience.
